What makes The Community Schoolhouse unique?

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION

The Community Schoolhouse curriculum is based on a school theme and is focused on the following Learning Areas during extended blocks of time:

· Science & Society
· Math & Technology
· Wellness & the Community
· Language and the Arts

Instruction integrates the Learning Areas and provides students with multiple opportunities to meet state standards, as well as Salem-Keizer Public Schools' graduation requirements. At the same time, students build self-confidence through personal challenge, teambuilding and wellness activities.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The Educational Program at The Community Schoolhouse is based on the Learning Areas and the student's personal interests, educational needs and career goals. The Educational Program enables students to:

· earn a high school diploma while mastering skills and knowledge based on Oregon's Certificate of Initial Mastery and Certificate of Advanced Mastery;

· actively engage in integrated themes of study and monitor progress towards graduation;

· design and implement long-term projects based on student interest and career goals with guidance from teaching staff, parents and community experts;

· complete a portfolio of work that can be utilized for university admission or employment, and

· collaborate with teachers, parents and mentors to create a positive, challenging and rewarding educational experience.

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE

The Community Schoolhouse has a flexible, daily schedule that follows Salem-Keizer Public Schools' modified yearly calendar. This provides students with expanded opportunities to participate in school-to-work programs, mentorships and field activities.

COMMUNITY MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

The Community Schoolhouse links students with community mentors in working partnerships. This year-long program allows students to serve an internship with a local mentor from the business community. These interns are placed at sites based on students' career interests.

Student interns work closely with adult mentors to acquire knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. Prior to placement, students are involved in a Community Classroom course to prepare them for their mentorship experience. Students further define and develop workplace skills at their mentorship site and at school.

THE INTERNATIONAL FRAMEWORK

The Community Schoolhouse is part of a global network of schools that work cooperatively on common projects and activities based on The 21st Century International Schoolhouse framework. The framework consists of:

· Local Action - student-implemented service learning projects aimed at improving the local community while providing students with knowledge and skills.

· Community Education - demonstration of knowledge and skills to the community, allowing students to educate the community while achieving high academic standards.

· Global Collaboration - participation in educational activities with students and teachers in eight different countries, including Argentina, Australia, Israel, Japan and Uganda.
