March 9, 2001 To Whom It May Concern: I write to state my support of The 21st Century Community Schoolhouse. The Schoolhouse is an excellent example of a public charter school, and I hope it will serve as a model for any future charter schools in Oregon. The school meets several critical needs in the Salem-Keizer School District. First it provides a welcoming and supportive environment that prevents students’ estrangement from each other or teachers. In the wake of yet another school shooting, we all recognize that alienation of students is a serious issue not only for the disaffected students, but for the nation. Second, the integrated curricula and small student-teacher ratio allows students who represent all levels of academic achievement to progress. And finally, the Schoolhouse promotes the skills, knowledge, and work ethics that students need in order to make contributions to their communities in the 21st century. As a former Oregon-certified public school teacher, I am especially pleased that the charter of the 21st Century Community Schoolhouse specifies that 100% of its teachers are state-certified, rather than the 50% that state law mandates. The founders of the Schoolhouse are committed public school teachers and administrators, and their acumen and dedication is unparalleled. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Willie Smith in my Salem office at 503-588-9100 if I can answer questions or provide any additional information about this excellent school. Sincerely, Darlene Hooley Member of Congress |
