Adopt a Poet

The purpose of this assignment is for you to become acquainted with a specific poet.  If you have a specific poet you love or if you know nothing about poets, this assignment will take an in-depth look at all aspects of a poet’s craft including the historical era and actual samples of his or her work.

When you complete your poet’s complete portfolio, you will be turning in:

·         A Poet’s Introduction

·         Historical Timeline

·         3 clean copies of 3 poems

·         Analysis of 1 poem

·         A paraphrased poem

These all need to be in a complete folder with a decorated cover.  Incomplete portfolios will not be accepted.  Professionalism is required, a.k.a. TYPE EVERYTHING before you turn it in.

This poetry unit will include 4 parts.  These parts can be done any time but all need to be completed.  Each separate part has specific instructions.

**Teacher Recommendation:  Set the goal of one part being due each day.

Due Date:  February 10, end of day

Any questions?  Contact your local Language Arts Teacher

Part I.  Poet Introduction

Fill out the following form for your rough draft.  Type your final draft in paragraph form.

Final draft must include all the information you found and must be in first person (as if you were the poet).

Ex.       I, Jim Henson, was born in Greenville, Mississippi on September 24, 1936.  I am the second child of Paul and Betty Henson.  My father worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  I spent a lot of time with my mom’s mother who was a very artistic person.  She encouraged my imagination a lot.  When I was in high school, I began to perform with puppets on television in Washington, DC.  At the University of Maryland, I had my own show called “Sam and Friends” on a local NBC affiliate station.

“Sam and Friends” was a good starting point for me.  A lot of the humor I used on the Muppet Show and other projects was first seen on that show.  I also introduced an early version of Kermit the Frog.  My success on the show led to commercials and national television appearances including The Steve Allen Show, the Jack Paar Show, The Today Show and The Jimmy Dean Show.  However, it was in 1969, with the premiere of Sesame Street that my muppets and I became truly famous.

 Rough Draft Paragraph

Part III.  3 Poems

Find three (3) poems written by your poet.

You will be looking for something specific in each poem so choose accordingly.

Poem 1.

Find a poem that interests you and write about why you like it.  Please include details from the poem itself.

Poem 2.

This is the analysis of a poem.  You should go through the following checklist and show on a copy of the poem if it has the following vocabulary:

                          Stanzas (# and type)

                          End Rhymes

                          Enjambments

                          Metaphors

After you analyze the poem based on the previous vocabulary, write a paragraph summarizing your findings and show their relevance to the meaning of the poem.
