Hello! I know we are all excited to be on summer break but we have one more quarter to get through! This quarter we will be focusing on research paper, Shakespeare, a fine arts unit and a mystery unit. If students or parents are interested in the grades for quarter 4, please go to www.mygradebook.com for up to date scores. Follow the directions for the single class login and if you are missing your student ID or your password, please see Ron or Kristina. Research Paper 5/3 Make sure students have Research Parts 1-3 in front of them Show overhead of student’s work Discussion: What is the overall message? (write down various answers) Choose 1 of 3 options: Ex. The author, Simon Kincaid, is the most influential writer alive. (info about author) Ex. The author, Simon Kincaid, has written the definitive novel about ice skaters. (info about author and book) Ex. Rock and roll music is the most influential form of entertainment for youth today. Subject “is” statement about subject Show class 3 examples from student’s work Students refer to own writings and write their own thesis statement to be ok’d by one of teachers Due by end of period: Thesis statement with teacher initials5/4 Students read for 10 minutes. Students take notes on Title

(Write down on a piece of paper, 3 or 4 whys. Advisable to use topic sentences at this point, not just single words) These will be the subject of the paragraphs/proof for your thesis statement. 5/5 Based on the why’s you did yesterday,
highlight/underline parts of Research Parts 1-3 that you will want to use in
your paper. Take out research notes,
prepare to take notes on citations. 3 types of citations, must have an example of each in your paper. 1. ARTICLE According to Collum, Fantasy writing is the only kind of writing (25). 2. “Fantasy writing is the only kind of writing.” ( Collum 25). 3. BOOK In his novel The Fantasy Child, Dave Collum tells us that imagination is the key to good writing (62; ch.4) 4. INTERVIEW Collum rolled his eyes and tried to answer the hard questions I asked him (Collum personal interview). Direct quote…if more than 4 lines, double indent the work. Paraphrase steps: 1. Skim the selection first. 2. Read the selection carefully. 3. List the main ideas. 4. Write the paraphrase. 5/6 Students worked on completing their rough drafts. The final paper should contain Section 1: Introduction and thesis; Section 2: Body paragraphs which contain at least 3 citations; Section 3: Conclusion; Section 4: Title Page and Works Cited. 5/7 Students were given pointers about the conclusion: 1. Restate thesis 2. Summary of arguments 3. Connection to reader's life or recommendation 5/10 Work day Rough draft due today! 25 points 5/11 Students were given back their rough drafts and need to complete a peer editing sheet. 5/12 Students began typing their final copy. These are due on Friday. 5/13 Final draft of Research Paper due today!!!! 5/14 Reward Day: students went to the park. Othello And thus begins the study of the Shakespearean classic, "Othello". Students will be exploring Shakespearean language, the themes in Othello and the story line. They will also be watching the movie "O" starring Mekhi Phifer and Josh Hartnett. 5/17 Char. DescriptionsOthello: commander/general, black man, well put together, hot tempered, called “The Moor”, married to Desdemona (black and white relationships frowned upon) Iago: villain, does evil for evil’s sake, older, more experienced, passed over for a promotion Cassio: younger than Iago, good looking, gentleman Roderigo: simple fellow, yields to peer pressure, does as he is told, tried to date Desdemona Barbantio: father of Desdemona, dislikes mixing of races Desdemona: white and very attractive woman, true to Othello SettingStory takes place in Venice, Italy. Our characters will travel by ship to Cyprus to help overcome an enemy. If you missed the class, the homework is to read the Othello summary (blue paper) to the first stop mark (I) and draw the notes on a piece of paper. Show relationships, caricatures, and the setting. (10 pts) 5/18 Today we reviewed the summary of the first part. Students got into groups of 3 and summarized Iago’s speeches on the handout. The first passage showed Iago’s thought process, the second showed his plan, and the third addressed what Iago sees from a distance and what he will try to do. If you missed the class, the homework is to read Iago's speeches and write a summary of each part. (20 pts) 5/19 Students took notes on the middle part of the play. If you need to find a summary, please refer to www.about-shakespeare.com/othello.php. 5/20 Today students did an interpretation of a significant scene in Othello. The scene was Act III, Scene 3. Students are required to "translate" until Iago's line, "I did not think he had been acquainted with her." If you need a copy of the scene, it can be found at http://the-tech.mit.edu/Shakespeare/works.html. (20 pts) 5/21 Students finished translating the lines and for the rest of the scene, were assigned a worksheet to be completed on Monday. (20 pts) 5/24 Students completed the green worksheet and took notes on the third and final part of the play. Students then turned these notes in for credit. (20 pts) 5/25 Students drew a picture of the most significant scene in the play and wrote an explanation as to why it is. (20 pts) 5/26 Students took a test today. (75 pts, short answer, matching and multiple choice) They can use any notes on the test. 5/27-5/28 Students are watching the movie today and tomorrow.
