Mt.
Jefferson Wilderness Service Project
On Saturday October 5, 2002, a group of Community Schoolhouse students
participated in a service project in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness for the U.S. Forest Service. The project involved wilderness
rehabilitation at Marion Lake. Students dismantled fire rings and enhanced
campsites around the lake.
The service project provided students with an opportunity to interact with
Forest Service personnel and see how some of our natural resources are being
managed. In addition, it allowed students to learn more about the natural
world around them. There were many opportunities for the students to
discuss various topics such as geology, wildlife biology, botany and “Leave No
Trace” wilderness ethics.
Some of the highlights included seeing the
beautiful fall colors, experiencing the solitude of the wilderness, and eating
at Giovanni’s Mountain Pizza in Mill City.
