New school adds grade 11
Since it opened last spring in downtown Salem, the charter school has served about 90 ninth- and 10-graders.
Adding 11th grade will allow the school to grow to about 130 students, said Tom DeJardin, the school’s executive director.
The Howard Street Charter School, which covers grades six through eight, also will grow next year.
Both schools will offer open enrollment in the fall to any student in the Salem-Keizer School District. Both are public schools.
By state law, a lottery must be held if there are more applicants than available spaces in charter schools. DeJardin said the waiting list for students who didn’t make the last lottery at his school is at about 150 names. He said the list could double as the application deadline nears.
A second lottery may be held in June if enough accepted students choose not to enroll. Individual lotteries occur throughout the year if students leave in midsemester.
