On Monday, May 21st, 20 students from The Community Schoolhouse embarked on a botanical adventure. The group traveled to Sunnyside Road in south Salem and planted a community garden. The students involved in our gardening project are excited about working in the garden over the summer and eventually donating the proceeds of the garden to the local food bank. Students who work in the garden will also be able to use fresh produce from the garden for their own families. The teachers at The Community Schoolhouse plan to use the garden as a starting point to plan lessons in mathematics, science, health and social studies. Students will be able to use the garden as a starting point to study issues such as chemical vs. organic food production, watershed quality, soil quality, food distribution, nutrition and a variety of other topics. |
