  Directions: 

Complete the following tasks and questions based on the Critical Thinking requirements outlined on the portfolio assignment direction sheet:

 

1)     Complete a timeline for the years 1952-1960 based on the Timeline Layout requirements. (See portfolio assignment directions sheet). 

 

2)     For the time period, 1952-1960, select a person who you think made the most significant contribution to mankind for better or for worse.  Cite three examples to explain your selected person’s significance.  For each example, write a paragraph. Include a picture of this person. 

 

3)     Literature of the Time:  The Quiet & the Storm 

a)  Read the passages An American Childhood and Daniel from the American Odyssey text (p. 454-455).  Complete paragraphs based on the following questions: 

o       The two passages present different views of the postwar United States, but in what ways are the two similar?

o       Daniel likens the FBI investigation to a searchlight in a Nazi concentration camp.  Why is this ironic. 

b)     The Hollywood Ten:  Read the Case Study and write paragraphs for each of the questions on page 543.

c)     Write your own reflection on the House Un-American Activities.  This could take the form of a poem, comic strip, lyrics to a song, letter to the editor (200 words) or an approved idea of your choosing.

  

4)     For the time period, 1952-1960, select a scientific discovery or technological breakthrough that you believe made the most significant impact, for better or for worse.  For your selected scientific/technological event: 

a.     Describe or explain the discovery or breakthrough

b.     Explain who the scientist(s) involved were

c.     Why you believe it is the most significant scientific event of the time

d.     How the event has impacted humanity since

e.     Include a visual to help explain the discovery and put a title on the page.

  

5)     The Contraceptive Pill was developed in 1957, but did not become available on the American market until 1960. 

          a.  Explain what the first Contraceptive Pill was and how it worked.

b.     Who developed it and who was advocating for its development.

c.     Explain why The Pill not released right away in the United States.

d.     Describe some of the controversies surrounding it.

6)     The Cold War of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s went to a whole new level on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched SPUTNIK.  Create a headline news story announcing the Soviet Union’s successful mission of SPUTNIK.  In your story include: 

a.  A brief historical background

  1. Discussion the technology used to make SPUTNIK a success
  2. The implications to the Cold War
  3. The reaction of the United States
  4. Include photos
