Introduction 

Over the course of the year, you will focus on integrated thematic units based on the significant historical and scientific events that took place between 1939-1999.  For each unit of study, you will complete a portfolio assignment.  Each portfolio assignment includes the three following requirements. 

 

I.     Timeline Layout 

For each portfolio assignment, you will complete a timeline based on the time period covered in each thematic unit.  In addition to being neat and creative, timelines must include the following: 

·        A timeline that include each year covered in the thematic unit

·        Fifteen historical (political, economic, social or cultural) events.  You must state the event and for at least five of the events, include a visual.

·        Ten scientific/technological events. You must state the event and for at least five of the events, include a visual.

·        A creative title that reflects the time period covered (include the years).

·        The use of color. 

 

II.     Critical Thinking Questions

For each portfolio assignment, you will answer a set of questions based on the time period covered in each thematic unit.  To successfully complete you questions, you must: 

·        Provide thoughtful and detailed answers that include examples.

·        Attempt to answer all the questions.

·        Type and neatly format each set of questions.

·        Include the same title used for your timeline.

·        Include your name and date in the heading.

 

III.     Creative Outcomes

For each portfolio assignment, you will complete 2 creative outcomes based on the time period covered in each thematic unit.  You must create one outcome that reflects the historical event(s) and one outcome that reflects the scientific event(s) on your timeline.  All outcomes must have at title and a descriptive caption. Creative outcomes could include, but are not limited to the following: 

·        Photographic Collage

·        Painting

·        Drawing/Sketch

·        Poem with a visual supplement

·        Song with a visual supplement

·        Your own idea (with teacher approval) 

Once you complete a portfolio assignment, it must be organized in the following order: 

·        Page # 1: Portfolio Assignment Sheet

·        Page # 2: Timeline Layout

·        Page # 3: Critical Thinking Questions

·        Page # 4: Historical Creative Outcome

·        Page # 5: Scientific Creative Outcome 


The Historical Portfolio 

At the end of the year, once you complete all the portfolio assignments, you will compile all the assignments into a full-scale portfolio.  You may choose to create either an online portfolio or a physical portfolio.  A complete portfolio must have the following components: 

·        A visually pleasing cover page

·        A short introduction

·        A Table of Contents

·        Completed portfolio assignments.

·        Dividers that separate each portfolio assignment.

·        A one-page reflection at the end of your historical portfolio, starting with the phrase:  “By completing this historical portfolio, I…”
