The Schoolhouse gives a second chance to students who are most at risk for dropping out. The 90 enrolled students are those who felt that they did not fit in to their large public high school. Many of the students speak a language other than English as a first language, or are academically gifted, or have learning disabilities. These students are not conventional, and were dong poorly in a conventional high school setting. However, at the Schoolhouse, these students have thrived. Attendance averages 90% or better, and reading and math skills have increased.

Several factors demonstrate strong community support for the school. The school has strong relations with the Salem-Keizer school district, and has been supported by a wide cross-section of community volunteers, parents and the business community. I would be happy to send you a list of our local contributors. Perhaps the most eloquent statement of support is the waiting list that has grown to more than 300 for the upcoming academic year.

The 21^st Century Community Schoolhouse is seeking additional to expand both its physical space and its teaching staff in order to expand enrollment to 130. I support this expansion, because each student admitted represents one more student contributing to the community and making academic progress.
