q       Religious Issues:  Catholic versus Protestant

q       Nixon: an experienced middle-class conservative-Vice President under Eisenhower.

q       Kennedy:  Senator, Millionaire with style, wit and charisma

q       Issues for the Election of 1960:  The Economy, Mutnik, Communism in Asia (Vietnam), Civil Rights and Cuba.

q       Candidates have more similarities than differences on the issues.

q       Nixon far more experience and qualified

q       Kennedy much better handle on the electronic media

q       Debate of 1960 benefits Kennedy

q       Kennedy responds to Soviet space efforts by promising to land a man on the moon.  John Glen becomes the first man to orbit the earth in 1962.

 

5)   Crisis in Cuba

 

q       Revolution and anger in Latin America:  USA companies control $7 Billion dollars worth of Latin America’s resources.

q       Nationalistic movements heat up—especially in Cuba

q       Cuba under the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista

q       America’s playground surrounded by extreme poverty.

q       Cuba only 90 miles from the USA.

q       Fidel Castro leads a peasant/middle class revolution.

q       Castro takes over and nationalizes USA property

q       Eisenhower snubs Castro and sets up secret force—La Brigada-aimed at overthrowing Castro’s government.

q       Castro turns to the Soviet Union for support.

q       In 1961—Kennedy inherits a Soviet satellite state located only 90 miles from the USA

q       Kennedy supports invasion, but want to keep it secret.

q       Bay of Pigs Invasion a disaster for Kennedy and the USA.

q       Kennedy and CIA launch Operation Mongoose in an attempt to remove Castro from power.

q       Khrushchev and Soviet Union respond by placing nuclear missiles in Cuba as a warning to the USA.

q       Kennedy considers options: Air Strike, Invasion, Negotiation, and Blockade.

q       USA Blockades Cuba in an attempt to prevent any Soviet shipments.

q       Kennedy makes national TV address informing Americans of a potential conflict.

q       USA and the Soviet Union—on the brink of nuclear war.

q       With the threat of all out nuclear war, USSR agrees to remove missiles on the condition that the USA vows to never invade Cuba and that they remove weapons from Turkey.

q       Kennedy agrees to the first demand but ignores the 2nd and warns Khrushchev to pull the missile or the US will take them out.  Khrushchev removes the missiles and war is avoided
