Letter to Parents re:  Fall End-of-Term Project

November 25, 2002

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Attached you will find the Fall--End of Term Project for the 2002/2003 school year. Consistent with the school theme of Inspiration, the Schoolhouse staff has written a project that allows students to create and perform a service learning activity within the Salem-Keizer community. Consistent with the spirit of the holiday season, students will create projects that are designed to inspire and bring hope to those who, for a variety reasons, have encountered personal hardships and obstacles.

Part of the project will require students to visit various locations throughout the Salem-Keizer community. The project will take place in the following three phases:

Phase # 1: Preparation Phase:

On November 26, 2002, students will hear inspirational stories designed to help them understand the potential strength and power they have in terms of making a difference in the lives of others and the community as a whole. After the presentation, students will be divided into groups of four where they will select, design and implement a service learning activity.

Phase # 2: The Service

After selecting and planning their service project, students will travel to a designated destination within the Salem-Keizer community to implement the service project. When leaving school, students will complete a form (see attached) that states the names of student(s), their destination, method of travel, the time of departure and the time to return to school. The form will be turned in to the student’s assigned advisor (teacher) so staff can regulate and track the number of students that are out of the building at a given time.

Since students will have the flexibility to leave the school without direct supervision from staff, parents/guardians will need to sign the attached permission slip releasing the school from liability and authorizing your child to complete off-campus activities related to the End of Term Project. The permission slip requires all students to use the city bus when traveling to and from the scheduled service activity. If for some reason, you would like to transport your own child to the activity, please let the school know. For liability reasons, the school strongly discourages parents/guardians from transporting any other student from the school.

Parents and students will also need to understand that if a student does not report back to their designated advisor at the arranged time, the student’s absence will be unexcused and parents/guardians will be contacted. If you prefer that your son/daughter NOT have the privilege to participate in end-of-term project off-campus activities, staff will provide an alternative method for completing the project.

Phase # 3: The Reflective Presentation

Upon completing the service activity, students will be required to complete a reflective presentation based on their experience. In December, students will work on a detailed reflective presentation designed to document their activity. Students will be scheduled to give their presentations to staff on December 12. Parents/Guardians are invited to attend.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at: 503-763-8958

Sincerely,
