#3  Use the following information to help you complete EXERCISES B, C, and CH on page G29 of the ¡DIME! DOS book:

Preterite of Regular and 3 Irregular Verbs

The preterite is used to talk about what happened in the past.  There are two sets of ending for regular verbs in the preterite:  1.) –ar verbs and 2.) –er,-ir verbs.

-ar

-er,-ir

Yo

é

í

aste

iste

Él/ella/usted

ó

Nosotros

amos

imos

Ellos/ellas/ustedes

aron

ieron

Some verbs require a spelling change to maintain consistent pronunciation of the verb stem.  The spelling changes are:

#1:  an unaccented i between two vowels changes to y.  This affects the usted/él/ella and ustedes/ellos/ellas forms of the preterite.

            Example:  No oyeron la información.

#2:  The letter c changes to qu before e or i.  This affects the yo form of verbs ending in –car:  practicar, calificar, explicar, etc.

            Example:  Practiqué fútbol ayer.

#3:  The letter g changes to gu before e or i.  This affects the yo form of verbs ending in –gar:  llegar, pagar, jugar, obligar, etc.

            Example:  Llegué tarde.

#4:  The letter z changes to c before e or i.  This affects the yo form of verbs ending in –zar:  comenzar, empezar, almozar, especializar, etc.

            Example:  Comencé mi tarea.

3 Irregular Verbs in Preterite Form:  IR, SER, HACER

IR

SER

HACER

yo

fui

fui

hice

fuiste

fuiste

hiciste

él/ella/usted

fue

fue

hizo

nosotros

fuimos

fuimos

hicimos

ellos/ellas/ustedes

IR and SER have identical forms in the preterite.  The context in which they are used clarifies the meaning.
