Teen Teachers A group of student Teen Teachers are working together with Community Schoolhouse teachers Andrew Goldstein and Molly Kellar to establish an implement the Community Learning Lab, an outreach program for homeless youth and adults in the Salem community. Their goal: create an educational program to teach job skills such as word processing, creating spreadsheets, and Web page development.
Student Teen Teachers gain first-hand experience in teaching by instructing clients in the technology areas of Keyboarding, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, FrontPage and Internet Applications. Teen Teachers have the opportunity to design and implement lessons based on the instructional software. Students also design and implement a reward system that involves the awarding of certificates and vouchers from local merchants that are earned based on the completion of units of study. Students also have the opportunity to learn about careers in human services. Staff from HOST Youth and Family Program, Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Project (HOAP), and HOME Youth and Resource Center meet with Teen Teachers to discuss progress toward Community Learning Lab goals. Students also have the opportunity to learn about the services and possibly intern at HOST, HOAP and HOME. The Community Schoolhouse designed the Teen Teaching program to allow students to focus on the theme of poverty. Students then applied this cross-curricular theme at both a local and global level. Upon analyzing issues relating to poverty, students developed their own solution aimed at addressing poverty in their local community. Their solution was working to design the Community Learning Lab as a way of bridging the technological divide. Students wanted to help those with limited access to technology and provide them with basic technological skills that assist them in acquiring employment. The design of the Community Learning Lab allows students at the Community Schoolhouse to acquire skills and knowledge that will assist them with their Certificate of Initial Mastery and Certificate of Advanced Mastery goals. |
