Directions:
Complete the following tasks and questions based on the Critical Thinking
requirements outlined on the portfolio assignment direction sheet:
- Complete a timeline for the years 1946-1951 based on the Timeline Layout
requirements. (See portfolio assignment directions sheet).
- Part # 1:
Go to:

and research the famous case against Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Click and
carefully review the Trial Account link. After achieving a solid
understanding of the case, review the other web site links and provide the
following information: (If your are interested in earning a 5 or Honors
credit, write your own story about the Rosenbergs so it reflects the following:)
- A very brief description of the time period.(1950)
- Background Information about the Rosenbergs.
- Klaus Fuch’s connection to the Rosenberg Case.
- What role did the Greenglass play in the arrests?
- What were the formal charges against the Rosenbergs?
- Describe the case for the prosecution (the Government).
- How was how the case against Julius and Ethel were different.
- Describe the case for the defense (the Rosenbergs)
- Describe the verdict and the judge’s sentence.
- Do you agree with the verdict and sentence?
Part # 2:
Consider what you have learned about the case and read the The
Rosenberg Trial: Stories of Love and Longing and the Final Letter to
the Sons (click on website links) and write a letter to the children (Robert
and Michael) of the Rosenberg’s that reflects your personal feelings regarding
the outcome of the case against their parents.
- For the time period, 1946-1951, select a person who you think made the
most significant contribution to mankind for better or for worse. Cite three
examples to explain your selected person’s significance. For each example,
write a paragraph. Include a picture of this person.
- For the time period, 1946-1951, select a scientific discovery or
technological breakthrough that you believe made the most significant
impact, for better or for worse. For your selected
scientific/technological event:
- Describe or explain the discovery or breakthrough
- Explain who the scientist(s) involved were
- Why you believe it is the most significant scientific event of the time
- How the event has impacted humanity since
e. Include a visual to help explain the discovery and put a title on the
page.

read about the Hydrogen Bomb and the Fusion Bomb and complete the following:
- Describe and illustrate the fusion reaction and elements involved in
detonating a hydrogen bomb.
- What were the problems that needed to be solved in order to build a
fusion of hydrogen bomb?
- Explain why the hydrogen bomb is really a composite bomb.
- Compare the explosion of a hydrogen bomb and an atomic bomb like Little
Boy.
- Which nations currently have hydrogen bombs? Which other nations claim
to have the capability to produce them?
- How many nuclear weapons does the United States now have stockpiled? How
many does Russia?
- Why is the threat of a nuclear war still a problem in the world today,
even though the cold war is over?
- During the Cold War, did the race to create a large number of powerful
thermonuclear weapons make the world safer or more dangerous? Explain your
thoughts. Make sure you neatly type and format at least one-paragraph
responses for each question. Include a title on the top of your paper.
- Complete your two creative outcomes for the years 1946-1951 based on the
Creative Outcomes requirements. (See portfolio assignment direction sheet.)
